In 2019-20, St. Joseph School began administering the Star Reading and Math Assessments, which we use to continuously improve and differentiate instructional practice and coordinate student support where needed. In 2020-21 all AOD schools switched to the Star test. This nationally-normed test shows that by the time St. Joseph students graduate as 8th graders, they are performing well above the national average. This data is consistent with the data from our previous standardized test, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.
We switched from our previous testing system, The Iowa Test of Basic Skills, in an effort to streamline our assessment process, compile data that would help us assess student progress and deliver the right instruction for every student, at the right time, for the right reason. Star data is backed by research, validity studies, and millions of data points, and uses cutting-edge learning science, data analytics, and test design to deliver maximum impact in minimal time.
We administer the Star test three times a year, and each session takes only 30 minutes, allowing us to minimize testing time and maximize instructional time. This puts less stress on the teachers and students and delivers a more accurate snapshot of where each student’s strengths and weaknesses lie. That gives us the ability to make real-time adjustments to instructional plans so as to maximize every student’s learning experience.
While standardized test results are not the only (or even the most important) measure of student success, they do offer an objective look at our school's academic program. We are proud of the excellent performance of our students, which is a testament to the hard work of our outstanding teachers.
